Los Médicos Voladores, also known as the Flying Doctors, is a nonprofit organization committed to providing free medical, dental, and vision care to underserved communities across California, Mexico, El Salvador, and other Central American countries.

Their mission extends beyond borders, ensuring that individuals who lack access to essential healthcare services receive the care they need. In addition to their international outreach, the organization collaborates closely with veteran service groups in California, assisting in coordination efforts to support vulnerable populations.

On Saturday, February 1, the Flying Doctors, in partnership with Healing California, a vitally essential non-profit dedicated to providing healthcare, and a dedicated team of volunteers, hosted a large-scale humanitarian event aimed at assisting individuals displaced by the devastating California wildfires, as well as others in need of healthcare services.

The event brought together an array of healthcare professionals, including UCLA dental students and volunteers from multiple medical disciplines, all eager to make a difference in the lives of those struggling to access care.

The Veterans Affairs building in El Monte served as the venue for this impactful initiative, transforming into a hub of compassionate care for the local community. Attendees had access to a wide range of healthcare services, including medical screenings, triage, and community outreach.

Vision care specialists provided eye exams and on-the-spot prescription glasses, ensuring that patients could see the world more clearly before leaving the event. Wellness services, including therapeutic massage and holistic care, were also available to promote overall well-being.

The dental care team conducted thorough oral cancer screenings, professional cleanings, cavity fillings, and tooth extractions, offering much-needed relief to patients who had gone without treatment for extended periods.

Among the passionate volunteers was Ms. Giselle Fernandez, third year UCLA dental student and President of the UCLA Chapter of the Hispanic Student Dental Association.

Reflecting on her experience, she said, “This event inspires others to get involved and truly defines what it means to help those in need. It is an exhilarating and deeply fulfilling experience that I will always cherish.”

Moved by the event’s impact, she expressed her commitment to continuing her volunteer efforts at similar initiatives, recognizing the ongoing necessity of providing aid to underserved communities.

Through events like this, Los Médicos Voladores and their partners continue to embody the spirit of humanitarian service, demonstrating that access to healthcare should not be a privilege, but a fundamental right for all. Their unwavering dedication to bridging healthcare disparities ensures that those most in need receive the care, support, and dignity they deserve.
