USA Today’s Woman of the Year 2023 honoree from Nevada supplies medical equipment for free to people living in poverty.
As executive director of Care Chest, Anne McNulty has expanded support for Nevadans in need across the state, providing critical medical equipment and resources. Her mantra of “be the hero in your own life” drives her to tackle adversity head-on.
In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, Anne McNulty knew she had to expand Care Chest’s mission of delivering medical equipment and resources to disadvantaged Nevadans statewide. Trained as a social worker, McNulty felt deeply compelled to help more people gain access to necessities like wheelchairs, diabetic testing supplies, and mobility equipment for their homes. She pushed herself even at the cost of sleep, driven by her mantra to “be the hero in your own life.”
McNulty credits her parents for instilling strong values and work ethic, and her father for modeling perseverance in the face of adversity. Though he battled blindness and colon cancer, he never gave up doing what he loved. McNulty applies a similar courageous approach to tackling obstacles, through thoughtful assessment and committed follow-through.
As a leader, McNulty aims to create an empowering environment for her team to develop, much as she supports the personal growth of her daughters. Among her proudest moments was Care Chest’s expansion to serve rural and southern Nevada counties, where medical poverty runs high. As McNulty says, “If we didn’t do what we do, people could die.” Her compassion and problem-solving leave the people she aids feeling less alone.
